ROUTES 2 ROOTS

South Africa's wealth and infrastructure were built on the backs of African migrant labour. Workers travelled from their homes in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal and other provinces to the Highveld mines.

Thrive's Routes 2 Roots program seeks to honour these workers by creating thriving food gardens and communities along these routes. Each garden will produce enough for the community, as well as some excess to be sold as part of our online food network.

In funding the program you can choose to receive an equivalent amount of "food credits" that can later be spent when purchasing from a participating community. Or you can donate them to worthy recipients.

HONOUR THEIR LEGACY NOW...

HOW DOES IT WORK?

HERE IS WHAT R600k CAN SEED IN ONE COMMUNITY

Every time R600k is raised, we will implement the following:
- One Tuk-Tuk and/or two electric waste collection bikes to collect waste;
- Thrive team to design, build, implement, and project manage setup and operations;
- Funding of driver / composter with salary and phone for one year until compost sales are sustainable;
- Funding of two growers with salary and phone for one year until compost / crop sales are sustainable;
- Site equipment for composting, water harvesting, and outdoor growing;
- Opex costs incl. fuel, seeds, consumables etc.
- Saleable products to include compost, organic fertilizers, and fruit and vegetable crops.

Each community must agree to make land of at least 1ha available. The exact structure of each site will dependent on local circumstances. After one year of sustainable operations the community can join the network for increased sales and must offer sale discounts to those funders who wish to use their food coins.

    HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY GROW FOOD IN SOME OF THESE AREAS?

    BY OBSERVING AND WORKING WITH (NOT AGAINST) NATURE

    It is true that industrial, chemical agriculture would likely fail in many of these areas, as it destroys soil and requires huge swathes of land with ever-increasing yield just to stay alive. When one instead takes a Nature-based approach to farming with natural fertilisers, concentrating on regenerating the soil, then input costs come down and crop quality improves drastically.
    - Where there are humans, there is waste.
    - Where there is waste, there is the chance to regenerate soil.
    - Where we have healthy soil (and a little sun and water) we can grow healthy crops, for healthy humans.
